The beginning of a new year is a time ripe for innovation. But implementing new ideas to scale quickly while keeping cloud costs down is a delicate balance to strike. January’s cloud cost news brings positive shifts in the market from AWS, Google, and SAP.
For instance:
- AWS Marketplace has lowered fees for sellers and expanded reselling options
- Google Cloud has launched Duet AI training to boost developer productivity
- SAP is helping customers move to the cloud for up to 50% less in migration costs
Let’s walk through the details of these new year developments.
Top Cloud Cost News From January 2024
AWS Marketplace makes it cheaper and easier for sellers to do business
AWS Marketplace is a digital directory that allows consumers to discover and purchase software, data, and services from SaaS companies, consulting partners, and channel partners. On January 5th, the platform announced a drop in seller listing fees for public subscriptions (now 3%) and private offers (now between 1.5% and 3%). Professional services fees remain the same at 2.5%.
In addition, AWS Marketplace now allows sellers to resell professional services from third parties. This move gives consumers the flexibility to buy software and services directly from the partner of their choice — for example, a company in their local area or one with specialized expertise, putting more power in customers’ hands.
In other news from AWS, customers can now use Amazon Interactive Video Service’s (Amazon IVS) low-latency streaming capability at audio-only pricing. This offers a 90% savings, as this new pricing is one-tenth the cost of Amazon IVS’ HD video rate.
Google Cloud’s new Duet AI generates code on demand, supercharging productivity
If your company is looking to enhance developer productivity (and in turn, drive down dev costs), you might want to look into Google Cloud’s Duet AI tool.
On January 18th, Google announced the release of a series of generative AI training courses for the tool to help all types of engineers improve their daily workflows. With Duet AI’s natural language interface that generates code on demand, developers can streamline the process of writing apps, calling APIS, and querying data.
Also new this year, Google Cloud is hitting the road to train developers on Duet AI. The first workshop in the Duet AI roadshow kicked off February 2nd in New York City. View the other dates and locations, and sign up here for these free events.
SAP migrates on-premises customers to the cloud at a reduced cost
A new year marks a change to SAP’s cloud migration program for on-premises customers, originally launched in 2021 under the name Rise and Grow to help more SAP users move to the cloud.
The new initiative, the Rise with SAP Migration and Modernization program, made headlines in January for increased incentives including a credit based on a customer’s annual contract with SAP, which has the potential to reduce migration costs by up to 50%.
“The financial incentives could help customers make a better business case for a migration, which can run into tens or hundreds of millions of dollars,” Liz Herbert, an analyst at Forrester Research told TechTarget.
